BT to switch off analogue telephone lines in 2025

British Telecom (BT) will be turning off all analogue telephone lines in 2025, this change will impact both business and home users as BT moves to convert customers to digital services.

In response to the change in consumer behaviour and changes in technology, BT have been working to phase out their Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) services in favour of digital services such as their super-fast fibre broadband network. In a move that will impact both home and business users, BT are recommending that customers take stock of what services are currently operating through analogue lines, as this will impact more than just voice calls with services such as alarms, EPOS, fax, and CCTV still running through this medium.

Whilst it may seem drastic, it is a reality that the UKs analogue telephone system is dated with some infrastructure being in place since the 19th century and despite great efforts by BT it is simply not possible to update it to support the most demanding applications. With superfast broadband solutions already in place, a range of digital telephone services available such as Voice over IP (VoIP) and an ever-growing list of voice applications such as Skype and WhatsApp, there are plenty of alternate options available.

VoIP, which was once thought of as a technical and business only application, will become the most widely adopted means of telecommunication. VoIP provides greater flexibility and allows you to configure multiple devices (handsets) to operate with the same telephone number and can be operated from any internet connection. You can also port your existing analogue telephone number over to a VoIP service which is a huge benefit for business users.

For our existing 4G and satellite broadband users the big switch off will reduce your utility bills as you will no longer have to pay for line rental. Talk to our sales team today about any remaining services that you have running through your BT landline to find out if they can be ported to us in advance.
