Government Committed to Provide Broadband across Every Household in the UK

The Department for Culture, Media & Sport has introduced the Better Broadband Subsidy Scheme in partnership with local broadband programmes, to fulfil the commitment of providing every UK home and business with access to a basic broadband service.

What is the better broadband subsidy scheme?

The Better Broadband Subsidy Scheme is a way for the UK to get better connected.  It will ensure that every UK household and business can access an affordable connection, no matter where they are located.

A subsidised broadband installation is now available for those who are unable to access an affordable broadband service.

Who Is Eligible?

The scheme is open to any household or business who is unable to access an affordable basic broadband service.

If the speed checker identifies that your current broadband speed is already faster than 2Mb per second, you will not be eligible for the subsidy.

If there are no existing plans to deliver a superfast broadband service to your home or business in the next 6–12 months  , you will be eligible for the scheme.

How Can I Check Broadband Services and Speed?

You can track broadband services available to you using the government’s Go Superfast checker. Your current broadband speed can also be tracked using the ADSL availability checker.

What Will Eligible Candidates Receive?

Eligible candidates will receive help with broadband installation costs as well as any equipment needed to access a better broadband service at an affordable price.

The scheme, however, does not cover the cost of monthly subscriptions: that fee will vary depending on connection speed chosen and data amount selected.

What broadband is available with the scheme?

The type of broadband available with the scheme will depend on factors including which type of connection is selected: either a satellite service or wireless.

Satellite broadband offers a host of benefits including:

  • high-speed satellite internet speeds of up to 30Mbps

  • guaranteed service levels of 99.5% uptime

  • easy monitoring

  • a discreet but robust satellite dish and modem.

Once your supplier has been chosen, you will be required to sign a contract for a minimum period of 12 months.
