What is unlimited data?

The vast majority of 4G and satellite internet providers sell service plans that have a monthly data cap that when breached will either result in slower speeds or additional costs. Historically this was not an issue as connection speeds were limited and most users did not consume so much data but since more and more online streaming services have been launched, such as BBC iPlayer, Netflix and Spotify, data usage has soared. Initially internet service providers responded by improving network infrastructure, improving speeds, to allow users to stream more and at better qualities but this also allowed users to use up their data very quickly.

Terrestrial internet service providers such as 4G, ADSL and fibre, have now reached a point where it is possible to offer unlimited internet data service plans allowing for both high speed connectivity and unlimited data consumption which means users can use as much data as they want. Due to the relatively high costs of satellite broadband capacity as compared to traditional methods of supply, to continue to deliver speeds approximating those being marketed, it has been necessary to apply monthly data usage allowances. As Bentley Walker Freedomsat have a long term view of delivering quality of service to our clients, we have not advocated the provision of unlimited satellite internet broadband data packages which permit heavy users to monopolise the available resources and deny access to those subscribers that use the service less intensively. As a result, in areas that are not covered by superfast internet (4G, ADSL or Fibre), satellite broadband services provide a huge boost in performance for those customers with a landline connection located far away from their local telephone exchange.
