Ofcom unveils proposals for faster & more reliable broadband

Industry regulator Ofcom has just announced new proposals to upgrade the UK’s infrastructure as demand for internet data increases, with homes and businesses all over the country set to benefit from more reliable fibre broadband and much faster speeds as a result of the new measures.

A four-point plan has been devised to support investment in fibre networks, including improving the business case for fibre investment and setting wholesale prices so they encourage competition from new networks.

Ofcom interim chief executive Jonathan Oxley commented: “Full-fibre broadband is much faster and more reliable. It’s vital that people and businesses everywhere – whether in rural areas, smaller towns or cities – can enjoy these benefits. So we’re making sure companies have the right incentives to accelerate full fibre to every part of the UK.”

In December last year, Ofcom’s Connected Nations report revealed that the availability of full fibre rose by 67 per cent and all four mobile networks launched 5G. Demand for online access has also risen, with the average monthly broadband data use climbing from 240GB per connection in 2018 to reach 315GB in 2019.

Those living in rural areas may well find that a satellite internet package could make all the difference when it comes to internet speeds. Such services can deliver headline speeds of up to 15mpbs, 22mpbs and 30mpbs, depending on the equipment in use, so it could make a real difference to consumers and businesses alike.
